Hutchison's Heroics Lift UCI over Cal Poly
September 29, 2017 | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- Elizabeth Hutchison's athletic effort sealed a dramatic double-overtime victory for the 'Eaters taking down Cal Poly, 2-1, in the 103rd minute Friday night at Spanos Stadium.
The competitive, evenly-contested match was decided in the 103rd minute by junior Elizabeth Hutchison. An initial shot from about 30 yards out was blocked, and the rebound was fought over by Grayson Galbraith and a Mustang defender. Hutchison won it back, wove between multiple Mustang players, and fired a bullet into the upper right corner to win the match for UC Irvine (6-3-3, 1-0-0), 2-1.
The match went into overtime after Cal Poly (5-6-1, 0-1-0) jumped on a rebound of their own. In the 88th minute, a long twisting shot was pushed aside by a sprawling Maddie Newsom covering the far post, but Georgina Stiegeler beat her to the rebound forcing it through the keeper and in to tie the match at 1-1 in the waning minutes.
The sides played a fairly even match all around as far as the stats were concerned. Newsom stopped seven shots setting a new career single-game high with Cal Poly outshooting UCI, 18-13, including five three more shots as a unit in overtime.
UC Irvine's regulation goal came in the 30th minute as Sydney Carr's cross was headed along by Shelby Lee putting the 'Eaters up 1-0 at the time.
Hutchison's goal is just the second of her career and first game-winner. Lee's goal was her third of the season and her career. Carr's assist had given her a point in four consecutive goals before the game-winner. Galbraith's assist was her ninth with the 'Eaters, but first on the season.
