Hoosiers Outduel Anteaters in Overtime, 2-1
August 31, 2014 | Women's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif. --- UCI and Indiana fought into extra time in Sunday afternoon's Auburn Soccer Classic match, but a 99th-minute strike put Indiana over the top for the 2-1 win.
Indiana (2-2-0) came out firing early with three shots, two that needed saving by Jenn Randazzo. Kayla Smith broke through for the Hoosiers in the 14th minute off a Molly Pittman assist to make it 1-0.
UC Irvine (0-4-0) trailed 6-2 in shots coming out of the halftime break, but found its form early in the second half. Jenna Pellegrino's corner kick found freshman Grayson Galbraith to even the match and break the Anteater scoring drought in the 49th minute.
The 'Eaters continued to pressure with some quick response shots, but had them blocked. Nevertheless, UCI rebounded with a 5-2 shot advantage in the second half as the game spilled over into overtime.
Laura McGrail and Bianca Frontino had some stellar chances in the first overtime period that were saved by Hoosier keeper Katie Greulich, but IU put away the match on a Veronica Ellis strike in the 99th minute.
The match finished even on shots, 9-9. Randazzo stopped four more shots to move her conference-leading total to 21 on the year.
Galbraith's goal was her first as an Anteater and first for a freshman since Sammie James' goal to open the 2013 season. Pellegrino registered her fifth career assist.
UCI returns home next week for a pair of matches in search of its first win. Fresno State comes to Anteater Stadium, Fri. Sept. 5, for a 7:30 p.m. match. Gonzaga closes the weekend out on Sun. Sept. 7 at 1:00 p.m.
