IRVINE, Calif. --- UCI finished its regular season perfect in the Big West as well as at Anteater Tennis Stadium with a 7-0 win over Hawai'I Sunday afternoon.
The 'Eaters were able to overcome a loss by 69th-ranked Franziska Goettsching and Kristina Smith in doubles to score the doubles point.
Freshmen Sarah Gong and Sarah Stadfelt shot out of the gate in singles with quick wins leaving the clinching point all to senior Kristina Smith. The 87th-ranked Smith hung on for the 7-6, 6-0 victory, her 73rd dual match singles win of her career, passing, of all people, her mom for third on the all-time UCI list along with former 'Eater Anna Bentzer.
UCI finished the regular season 20-3, only the second 20-win season under Coach Edles. UCI also finished 9-0 in Big West play marking the second time UCI has won a regular season title and gone perfect in conference play matching its 2007 season when the squad went 7-0. UCI matches the 2007 which also went 14-0 at home.
UC Irvine will be the No. 1 seed for the Big West Tournament that starts on Thursday. UCI will first play on Friday, April 26th at 8:00 a.m. as it awaits the Pacific-Cal Poly winner.
