UCI Climbs Second Half Mountain for 2-1 Win
September 07, 2012 | Women's Soccer
DENVER, Colo. --- Dana Sanderlin and Laura McGrail scored rapid-fire goals in the 59th and 60th minutes of the second half to give the Anteaters the 2-1 come-from-behind win over the Cincinnati Bearcats Friday afternoon in the opening match of the Denver University Invitational.
UCI (3-4-0) trailed early in the second half after a 22nd minute-goal by Bearcat Jazmine Rhodes. In the 59th minute, Natalia Ledezma played a ball into the right side of the box for senior Dana Sanderlin who put away the tying goal into the upper left portion of the goal.
The Anteaters rode the momentum as Ledezma came right back down the field not even a minute later and sent a beautiful cross to sophomore Laura McGrail who volleyed the pass in giving UCI the 2-1 lead in the 60th minute.
Cincinnati (3-2-1) made a late surge which included a header from Lauren Hettinger that bounded off the crossbar, but keeper Jenn Randazzo kept the Bearcats out as her two saves would be enough to give the Anteaters their first winning streak on the year.
Natalia Ledezma assisted on each goal for her first two points on the season.
McGrail scored the game-winner for the second game in a row. Both of her goals in her Anteater career have been game-winners.
Sanderlin notched her 12th career goal. She leads all active Anteaters with 12 goals and 36 points. Ledezma is close behind with 34 points.
UCI's weekend concludes in the finale of the Denver University Invitational as it will play the host school, Denver Pioneers, in a 12:15 p.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 9th.
