IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine senior Charles Jock reclaimed the league title in the 800 meters, but not by much, at the Big West Conference Track & Field Championships Saturday at Anteater Stadium.
Jock won the race in a conference meet and stadium-record time of 1:44.75 in another epic duel with UC Santa Barbara's Ryan Martin, who was the runner-up in 1:44.77. Those times presently rank 1-2 in the collegiate and U.S. ranks this season.
Martin defeated Jock by .06 in the conference meet a year ago, and after four years, they each have two Big West 800 titles (Jock in 2012 and 2010, Martin in 2011 and 2009).
UCI's Cam Mitchell finished seventh in the 800 final with a time of 1:52.17.
Anteater senior Jacob Yowell won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.00 and he was runner-up in the 400 hurdles with a time of 51.9. Trevor Wightman placed sixth in the 400 hurdles in 53.27.
Jock and Yowell were members of the UCI 4x400 relay that took first place in 3:11.17. Dominic Jester ran the opening leg, Jock the second, Chris Carson the third, and Yowell the anchor leg.
Mike Kennedy finished sixth in the 100 meters (10.90) while Riley Martin (3:50.77) and Nick Osborne (3:53.71) finished seventh and eighth, in the 1500 meters, earning team points for UCI.
In field events, freshman Stephen Brown placed fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 16-4 ¾ that ranks No. 9 in UCI history.
Alex Campbell, another freshman, finished fifth in the high jump with a leap of 6-7 and Kennedy was seventh in the long jump at 23-3 ½.
The Anteater men finished seventh in the team competition with 69 points as UC Santa Barbara won its first Big West men's title with 179. Long Beach State was second with 150 points and Cal State Northridge third with 117.
