Anteaters Stumble Against UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. --- No. 66 UC Irvine fell for the second time this week as the UC Davis Aggies sprung up on them for the 5-2 win Saturday at Marya Welch Tennis Center.
UC Davis jumped out early with the doubles point. Franziska Goettsching (Heitersheim, Germany / Faust Gymnasium) and Kristina Smith (Laguna Niguel / Dana Hills HS) salvaged the sweep with a tiebreaker win in the No. 2 slot.
Smith would ocme back in singles and win in straight sets that kept the UCI (13-7, 5-2) in the match at the moment down just 2-1. Marivick Mamiit (Los Angeles / William and Mary) followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Head Coach Mike Edles' daughter, Ellie, to tie match up at 2-2.
UC Davis took the lead back at No. 5 after a marathon first set that saw senior Stephanie Hammel (Placentia / Valencia HS) fall, 7-4, in the tiebreaker. Goettsching could not pull out the point at No. 3 as UC Davis would clinch and eventually win, 5-2.
UCI drops its second consecutive match after coming into the weekend with a nine-match win streak. The Anteaters will finish their road trip and their regular season slate with a trip to Stockton to take on the Pacific Tigers Sun. Apr. 15th at 10:30 a.m.
