Anteaters Go Dark Against Rainbows

IRVINE, Calif. --- UCI fell victim to the unranked Rainbows for Hawaii (3-2) after a 4-3 defeat in a marathon match Thursday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The 'Eaters started off slow in doubles as Stephanie Hammel (Placentia / Valencia HS) and Ali Facey (Cameron Park / Ponderosa HS) fell just short, 8-6, to put the 'Eaters down early. Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame Prep HS) and Hannah Holladay (La Jolla / La Jolla HS) jockeyed back and forth with their opponent before pulling out an 8-6 victory to pull even. Meanwhile, the epic No. 2 match with Franziska Goettsching (Heitersheim, Germany / Faust Gymnasium) decided the doubles match. The pair were down, 7-2, early on before mounting their comeback. They would pull ahead, 8-7, with a furious rally before Hawai'I got a point to bring it back to 8-8. Goettsching/Smith would come from behind again in the tiebreak to eventually win that, 10-8, and give UCI the doubles point after an hour and 45 minutes of play, one of the longest doubles points according to head coach Mike Edles.
Singles began with the squads splitting with each winning three first sets. Goettsching and Byron would drop their matches in straight sets to put Hawai'I on top, 2-1. Ali Facey (Cameron Park / Ponderosa HS) got the 'Eaters (2-3) back even with a quick, three-set win, but Kristina Smith struggled and was ousted in straight sets. Hawai'I led, 3-2, as Marivick Mamiit (Los Angeles / College of William & Mary) and Kat Facey battled in their third sets. Facey jumped out to a 5-0 lead as Mamiit remained tied at 4-4. Mamiit couldn't keep it up, and would fall, 6-4, giving Hawai'I the clinching point. Facey would finish up with a 6-2 win making the final score 4-3.
UCI is now 1-1 on the homestand with No. 75 Wyoming next up in an 11:00 a.m. match on Sat. Feb. 11th here at Anteater Stadium.
