Anteaters Compete in 4-3 Loss to No. 29 Waves

IRVINE, Calif. --- The 'Eaters finished their homestand with a 2-2 mark after a 4-3 loss to 29th-ranked Pepperdine Thursday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame Prep HS) and Hannah Holladay (La Jolla / La Jolla HS) couldn't quite figure out the No. 1 combo for the Waves (3-3) as they fell, 8-4. The sisters Ali Facey and Kat Facey (Cameron Park / Ponderosa HS) got their first shot of the season together as No. 3 doubles and made the most of it playing very nicely and winning, 8-4, over a duo that included Ale Granillo, the No. 95-ranked player in the nation. With doubles tied, 1-1, Franziska Goettsching (Heitersheim, Germany / Faust Gymnasium) and Kristina Smith (Laguna Niguel / Dana Hills HS) rallied to win the final three games and give UCI (3-4) the doubles point with an 8-4 win.
As singles began, Ali Facey struggled going down, 6-0,6-0, and quickly tying the overall score up, 1-1. Pepperdine would win three more first sets while Kat Facey and Marivick Mamiit (Los Angeles / College of William & Mary) each took a set. Goettsching dropped her second set to give the Waves the lead at 2-1. Byron and Smith, who flipped slots this week, each played very tough. Byron would surrender the second set and fall while Smith ran neck-and-neck in the No. 1 slot with 95th-ranked Ale Granillo before losing her second set which clinched the match for Pepperdine.
Kat Facey and Mamiit each battled in their second sets, but the Waves were able to win each one and force a third set. Facey and Mamiit were able to battle through 10-point set tiebreakers to win the set and the final two points for the 'Eaters to close the match out, 4-3.
The four-match homestand comes to an end as UCI heads out to San Diego State on Sat. Feb. 18th for a 12:00 p.m. match. SDSU also lost 4-3 to Pepperdine last week after winning the doubles point.
