UCI Singles Charge for Late Upset

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- UC Irvine kept up the good play with a big-time win over No. 48 San Diego State on the road, 5-2, at the Aztec Tennis Center.
Franziska Goettsching (Heitersheim, Germany / Faust Gymnasium) and Kristina Smith (Laguna Niguel / Dana Hills HS) continued their doubles dominance with an 8-2 win to put UCI (4-4) ahead in doubles play. San Diego State (2-4) came back to win the other two doubles matches and get the point to go up 1-0.
UCI singles came out firing with big wins from Kat Facey (Cameron Park / Ponderosa HS) and Kristina Smith. For Smith, it was her first win in the No. 1 slot over the Aztecs' Julia Wais ranked No. 117 in the nation. UCI would go up 3-1 thanks to Stephanie Hammel (Placentia / Valencia HS) who was making her first appearance in singles in over a year as she locked down the No. 6 slot. SDSU would win the No. 3 slot to stay in it, but Marivick Mamiit (Los Angeles / College of William & Mary) would provide the clincher as the No. 5 to give UC Irvine the eventual 5-2 win.
The No. 58 'Eaters posted its second win over a ranked school after beating No. 75 Wyoming last week. Earlier in the week, they lost by one to No. 29 Pepperdine making it three matches in a row against ranked squads with a record of 2-1.
UCI will play next on Sat. Feb. 25th at Loyola Marymount.
