Anteaters Fall at Home, 2-1
September 05, 2026 | Men's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer suffered its first loss at home since 2024 on a late Missouri State winner, 2-1, Saturday night in Anteater Stadium.
Anything You Can Do
Anything You Can Do
- The early minutes were a chess match, both sides trying to build and see the other's tactics. UCI had a majority of the early attack, but could never capitalize on the threat
- Missouri State nearly got a gift goal with Joe O'Shaughnessy's boot following a goal kick blocked by a Bears attacker that slotted just by the post
- UCI found its rhythm and put home the match's first goal in the 22nd minute
- The 'Eaters built up the left wing with Shane Kaemerle receiving the ball along the endline and feeding a ball through the box that Ferran Duran ran onto depositing a shot inside the right post to go ahead, 1-0
- Missouri State wasted little time with an answer that was eerily similar to UCI's goal
- O'Shaughnessy made a fantastic kick save prior to the sequence which started with a throw-in on the right wing. Diego Real received the throw-in and sent in a feed from the endline through traffic to Fionn Mooney getting a boot on it and into the open left side of the net to even the match, 1-1, in the 28th minute
- The rest of the half had a pair of chances. Missouri State found an open man on the back post off a corner that headed the ball wide. Marcus Lee in the final half minute curled a shot just of the far post to keep things even at the halftime whistle
- Each side came out as aggressors in the second half vying for that go-ahead goal
- UCI had a marvelous chance in the 52nd minute as a Missouri State defender fumbled a ball in their own third and Zac Smuck drove on goal, but sent a line drive shot right into the keeper
- The 'Eaters had a majority of the shots after the Bears finished with three more in the first half, UCI sent 10 toward goal in the second half alone
- Missouri State got some momentum in the 77th minute with four corners in a four-minute span and found a breakthrough in the 81st minute
- They played a short corner and whipped a ball to the back post that was headed back in front of goal and eventually won by Kei Kinoshita who flipped a shot into the roof of the goal to go ahead, 2-1
- UC Irvine's last gasp included a potential penalty that was reviewed but not given, and an ensuing set piece from just outside the box in the 87th minute was gloved by the Bear keeper off Marcus Lee's foot eliminating UCI's chance of drawing even
- The matchup between two teams who were each unbeaten this year and receiving national votes ended in a winner for the Bears who remain unbeaten in the all-time matchup, 2-0-2
- UCI's loss was its first since 2024 in Anteater Stadium which had grown to 17 matches and a 13-0-4 record in that time
- Duran was playing in just his second collegiate match and making his first-ever start when he scored, the first goal and point in the college career of the Spaniard
- Assisting was Shane Kaemerle, his second on the year, and Brady Treinen, his third this year, third time in four matches with an assist, and now 13 assists and 15 points in his career
- O'Shaughnessy in net managed two saves, now with 11 this year and 52 as an Anteater
- Along with Duran, James Arteaga made his first career start on the night
