Anteaters, No. 19 Oregon State Draw, 3-3
August 20, 2026 | Men's Soccer
First Half's Finest
- The opening 45 minutes was action-packed with a penalty goal, two goals in the run of play, and a red card
- The scoring didn't take long with Gage Lyons drawing a foul in the fourth minute and then stepping up to convert a penalty for a 1-0 lead
- Each team looked for the next goal with chances on target for each. Oregon State got the best one with Wyatt Borso getting space on the left wing, and his curling shot was just tipped long by Joe O'Shaughnessy
- The Beavers kept knocking on the door before breaking through in the 22nd minute
- A clinical sequence along the left wing ended up with Michael Nesci feeding a pass to the center of the six-yard box from the endline for Oliver Hernandez Parra to nudge home for the 1-1 tie
- The next big chance resulted in another goal as the 'Eaters connected in the 26th minute
- Braden Ferreira fed Marcus Lee along the touchline who made a high-wire act along the boundary and finding space to cross it into the box, and Cristian Gallo dove straight forward and headed a ball back across and inside the far post for a 2-1 lead
- Neither side could muster another threatening chance down the rest of the half, but in the 43rd minute another wrinkle formed
- Isaiahs Gutierrez created a turnover just past midfield and was headed to goal before he was taken down by Oregon State's Jacob Zapien and was shown red for denying a goal scoring opportunity and leaving OSU to 10 men for the final 47 minutes
- Even down a man, the Beavers took hold of the match early in the second half earning a corner kick a minute in
- The ensuing service found Gavin Wolff above the fray to head it home and even the match again, 2-2, in the 47th minute
- The Anteaters went on the attack firing up a number of shots with 19 in all in the second half alone
- Keeper John Nicolson was up to the task making three saves in the next six minutes including two on a full dive to keep things level
- The Anteaters got their lead back on a hectic sequence in the 66th minute
- UCI struggled to maintain possession but kept the ball in the attacking third. Shane Kaemerle found some daylight and turned to goal firing an initial shot that was blocked and a rebound that floated off the crossbar
- That rebound found Isaac Powell outside the top of the box who whipped another shot on frame and snuck it inside the left post for a showstopping third goal and retaking the lead, 3-2
- UCI continued to hold possession and create chances with little to show, and Oregon State made the most of their first shot in nearly 20 minutes coming in the 77th minute
- A foul outside the arc gave the Beavers a set piece, and Max Eisenberg buried it into the upper left corner to tie things up for a third time, 3-3
- Oregon State's defense stood tall down the final 13 minutes denying the Anteaters at every turn.
- The Beavers actually got the best chance down the final stretch getting fortuitous bounces on a drive through the midfield, and the final one popping out to Eisenberg 1v1 with O'Shaughnessy who came out to challenge his shot and it paid off blocking the attempt and holding things even.
- The offenses were on display with 39 shots between the squads and UCI on top, 24-15
- The 'Eaters also put nine shots on target to OSU's eight with both keepers playing well with five saves to O'Shaughnessy and six to OSU's Nicolson
- Six different Anteaters recorded points on the night with goals by Cristian Gallo, the second of his career, Gage Lyons netting his 16th career goal on his 100th career shot and sixth Anteater goal, and Isaac Powell connecting for his fifth goal and 25th career point.
- Assists went to Marcus Lee, the fifth of his career, Shane Kaemerle, his second, and the first career assist and point to Braden Ferreira
- Some new faces graced the pitch including Mario Nordstrom who made his UCI and collegiate debut in the Starting XI playing all 90
- Coming in as a reserve were sophomore Royie Rahamim making his UCI debut, and freshmen James Arteaga, Pierce Rizzo, and Kenshi Pivernetz all with their first collegiate minutes
- The result is the first against a ranked team for UCI since a win over No. 13 Cal State Fullerton in 2023
- The draw keeps UCI's streak alive now 16 consecutive home matches without a defeat with a record of 12-0-4 in that stretch
