UC Irvine Nails Down First Win, 3-1

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer checked off its first win of 2026 with a 3-1 defeat of LMU Monday night in Anteater Stadium.

- A crowd of 1,346 were in attendance for watch the SoCal rivals
- Neither side managed a shot until LMU's in the 14th minute, but the 'Eaters were the first on the board
- Gage Lyons nearly got one to go in the 17th minute getting a 1v1 chance that was tipped long by a dive by the challenging keeper
- The ensuing corner kick found the back of the net when Marcus Lee whipped a ball in that was flicked on by an LMU defender for the 18th minute own goal and 1-0 UCI lead
- UCI was holding possession with 58% in the first half, and kept it in the attacking third before finding another goal in the 43rd minute
- The Anteaters were charging upfield and Gage Lyons got the last touch beating the keeper off his line and nudging the ball ahead, off the left post, and in the net for a 2-0 advantage
- After a 5-1 shot advantage in the first half for UCI, LMU flipped momentum just 94 seconds in with a goal
- On the first shot of the half, Alexander Vagenas fed Axel Uriostegui Lopez all alone inside the top of the box who flushed a ball inside the far post to suddenly make it a 2-1 UC Irvine lead
- Both sides were on the front foot looking for the pivotal next goal including a chip by LMU in the 63rd minute that was heading for the goalline before Gustavo Gonzalez swooped in to save it
- The Anteaters had a few consecutive chances that went wanting, but got their two-goal advantage back in the 67th minute
- UCI jumped on a turnover at midfield and drove on goal. Brady Treinen passed it wide to Gage Lyons who made the extra pass to a wide open Hunny Yoo for the goal
- The linesman called offside to nullify the goal, but UC Irvine used a challenge to send it to a video review
- After the review, the center official determined Lyons was on side and awarded the goal to make it 3-1 UCI
- The Lions kept attacking with a few more chances late that needed saving. LMU finished with seven shots, six on target, and five turned away by Joe O'Shaughnessy or his defense to close out the victory
- The win boosts UCI's home unbeaten streak to 17 straight matches (13-0-4)
- O'Shaughnessy stopped four shots while posting career win No. 14 and 12th win at UCI
- Lyons had his first career match with a goal and an assist
- The goal went down as the game-winner giving him 17 career goals and six game-winners, and as an 'Eater as seven goals and four game-winners
- Hunny Yoo added the other goal, his second with the 'Eaters, along with the own goal
- Additional assists were registered to Marcus Lee, his second straight game with one and sixth in his career, and Brady Treinen earned two assists, his first career two-assist match, for assists 11 and 12 of his career
- Some milestones went down in the match including the first career start for freshman Pierce Rizzo
- Three Anteaters made their collegiate debuts with freshmen Javier Bedolla Vera and Matthew Miranda coming off the bench, and third-year Cade Williams in his second stint with the Anteaters earning his first Division I minutes
