
Anteaters Impress on First Day of Big West Championships

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's track & field team closed out the first day of action at the Big West Championships Friday at Long Beach State's Jack Rose Track.
Senior Joshua Schuld scored in the steeplechase with a fourth-place finish. Schuld ran a personal-record 8:49.00, which ranks fourth in school history.
The Anteaters had two conference scorers in the shot put, led by senior Chimobi Onye, who was fifth overall. Onye unleashed a lifetime-best 17.47 meters (57-3.75) on his sixth and final attempt to move up two spots in the standings. Onye's mark cracked UCI's all-time top-10 at No. 9. Senior Joe Duggan was also eighth with a toss of 16.90m (55-5.5).
Sophomore Duke Pascoe added three points in the hammer throw as he came in sixth with a best of 58.51m (191-11).
Junior Juan Chantaca finished eighth in his first career 10,000-meter race on the track. Chantaca crossed the finish line in 31:30.48.
Sophomore Justin Johnson registered a lifetime-best 20.53 to win his heat in the 200m. Johnson saw a .16 second improvement on his No. 2 time in program history. He will move on to tomorrow's final.
Johnson and senior Brandon Burns both earned a time qualifier out of the 100m prelims. Johnson clocked in at 10.42 seconds, while Burns ran a lifetime-best 10.43, bettering his No. 3 mark in school history.
Junior Logan Lyght won his section of the 110m hurdles in 14.15 seconds. Senior AJ Taylor wasn't far behind with a season-best 14.24. Both Lyght and Taylor qualified for Saturday's final.
Junior Brendan Clark was a time qualifier in the 400m at 47.29. Junior Roman Mendoza also advanced out of the 400m hurdle prelims with a season-best 53.00.
