March 28, 2026

IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine men's track & field broke a 45-year-old school record in the 4x100 relay to highlight Saturday's action at the Vince O'Boyle Classic at Anteater Stadium.

Brandon Burns, Justin Johnson, Logan Lyght, and Brendan Clark combined for the first sub-40 second 4x100 relay in program history. The quartet clocked in at 39.84 seconds, which topped UCI's previous standard of 40.08 which had stood since 1981. Their time is also fifth in the West Region and 18th in all of NCAA Division I this season.

Burns, Lyght, and Clark added individual victories later in the meet. Clark took home top honors in the 200m where he ran a lifetime-best 21.43.

Despite running into a slight headwind, Lyght registered a 110m hurdle time of 13.99 to finish first. He was just .03 seconds off his personal best. AJ Taylor was the runner-up in a season-best 14.37.

Burns was the 400m champion, crossing the finish line in 48.12. Johnson (49.13) was second and Matthew Irvine (49.39) came in fourth.

Javin Schmitt clocked a PR 3:53.16 for the 1500m win. Schmitt has seen an improvement in each of his three 1500m races, this time shaving six seconds off his previous best. Jacob Bustamante added a PR 3:53.76 to place second, while Juan Chantaca (3:57.41) was third.

Roman Mendoza had a third-place performance in his 400m hurdle season debut (55.19).

In the field events, Colin Green won the triple jump with a personal-record 14.92 meters (48-11.5). Green's PR came on his final attempt and put him ahead of teammate Kenechukwu Okonkwo who was second at 14.82m (48-7.5). Green cracked UCI's all-time top-10, coming in at No. 8.

Jake Reed was the last man standing in the pole vault with a season-best clearance of 4.78m (15-8.25). That height also matched his personal best.

Joe Duggan finished ahead of the pack in the shot put with a lifetime-best 16.94m (55-7). Chimobi Onye (16.47m/54-0.5) wasn't far behind in second. Duggan (50.75m/166-6) and Onye (48.44m/158-11) also led the 'Eaters in the discus where they were second and fourth, respectively.

UC Irvine is back in action next weekend when it heads south for the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, April 3-4.
