LA JOLLA, Calif. - No. 11 UC Irvine women's water polo team defeated tournament host No. 12 UC San Diego, 14-9, in the final game of the Triton Invitational to finish in seventh place on Sunday morning.Â
The 'Eaters netted two quick goals to take an early 2-0 lead. The Tritons got one back before the Anteaters added two more to pad their advantage, 4-1. UC San Diego went on a 3-0 spurt to tie it up, 4-all. UCI added a tally before the horn to regain the lead, 5-4, at the end of the first. The 'Eaters found the back of the net twice to start the second and widen the gap, 7-4. The Tritons netted two of their own to pull within one, 7-6. UC Irvine added two tallies to end the half up, 9-6. The Anteaters and Tritons traded goals to start the third period to leave UCI up, 10-8. The 'Eaters netted two in a row before UC San Diego got the final tally of the period to cut the lead, 12-9, heading into the fourth. The Anteaters added two goals in the fourth period to secure the 14-9 victory.Â
BY THE NUMBERS: Junior Lauren Hett led the squad with five goals. Pippa Heaver, Sara Naulty, and Michelle Urkov each added two tallies.Â
Chloe Patist, Madi O'Hara, and Vivian Bailey each netted one.Â
Abigail Schechter led the Tritons with four goals.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: Lauren Hett capitalized on an early power play to give the 'Eaters an edge at the 7:14 mark. Michelle Urkov found the back of the net at the 6:24 mark to increase the lead, 2-0. The Tritons quickly got one back before Pippa Heaver netted one at the 5:56 mark to maintain the Anteaters advantage, 3-1. Hett netted her second of the period at the 3:09 mark when she capitalized on the man advantage to widen the gap, 4-1. UC San Diego went on a 3-0 spurt, the first tally coming on a five-meter attempt and the second on the man advantage to tie it up, 4-4, at the 0:46 mark. Vivian Bailey regained the lead for the 'Eaters at the 0:28 mark to end the first period up, 5-4.Â
Hett converted on a five-meter attempt (7:40) to secure the hat trick and add to the Anteaters lead, 6-4. Heaver netted her second of the game at the 6:56 mark to widen the gap, 7-4. The Tritons capitalized on two power plays to pull within one, 7-6, at the 4:37 mark. Chloe Patist netted one (3:18) before Urkov capitalized on the man advantage (1:06) to pad the 'Eaters advantage, 9-6, at the end of the half.Â
The Tritons converted on the man advantage before Hett capitalized on the 'Eaters power play (6:19) to maintain the lead, 10-7. UC San Diego took advantage of a five-meter attempt to pull within two, 10-8, at the 5:17 mark. Madi O'Hara added a tally (5:03) before Sara Naulty converted on the man advantage (2:15) to widen the gap, 12-8. The Tritons netted one on a penalty shot to cut the lead, 12-9, at the horn.Â
Hett netted her fifth of the game on the power play (6:44) to widen the gap, 13-9. Naulty found the back of the net for the final goal of the game (1:03) to seal the 14-9 victory.Â
