Anteaters Take Down 4x400 School Record in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. – UC Irvine women's indoor track & field started the season strong with a school record and three event wins Saturday at the Spokane Indoor Challenge.
 
In the final event of the meet, Jazzmine Davis, Aoife Hernon, Gabrielle Hawkins, and Esmeray Demirbas combined for a program-best 3:45.77 in the 4x400 relay. The quartet topped UCI's previous standard by two seconds.
 
Earlier in the day, Davis won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.71 seconds. She was one of four 'Eaters to make it to the final. Joy Anderson (8.86) and Kailah McKenzie (8.88) were second and third, respectively, while Sarah Ajayi came in fifth (9.00).
 
Hernon, who was making her UC Irvine debut, also finished ahead of the pack in the 400m. Hernon clocked in at 55.43, which puts her at No. 3 in the Anteater record book. Demirbas was the runner-up with a time of 56.16.
 
Nyla Baker improved on her No. 4 mark in school history with a toss of 14.62 meters (47-11.75) to claim the shot put title. Pinkie Schnayer finished third with a lifetime-best 13.98m (45-10.5), which moved her up one spot into a tie for sixth among UCI's all-time leaders. Leilah Lauifi added a PR and top-10 showing (12.48m/40-11.5).
 
DeAna Davis secured runner-up honors in the weight throw, launching a personal-best 16.47m (54-0.5). She now ranks fifth in program history.
 
Jessie Condliff led three 'Eaters in the pole vault as she finished second in her collegiate debut. Condliff cleared 3.82m (12-6.25) to rank second among UC Irvine's all-time top-10. Kaylee Tan also reached 12 feet, coming in fourth and tying the fifth-best mark in school history at 3.67m (12-0.5). Alana Sugue, who missed last season with an injury, placed sixth (3.52m/11-6.5).

Zharia Taylor (1.75m/5-8.75) and Anderson (1.70m/5-7) were second and third in the high jump. Anderson's height ranks sixth in school history.
 
Kailah McKenzie was the runner-up in the long jump at 5.61m (18-5).
 
In the 60m final, Halle Sutherland was second (7.55), while Samantha Bartz matched her PR at 7.65 to take fifth.
 
UC Irvine will be back in action in two weeks when it heads to Seattle, Washington, for the UW Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 31.
