IRVINE, Calif. – Angel Cordero has been named the Big West Men's Track & Field Freshman of the Year the conference office announced Friday morning.

Cordero was an NCAA West First Round qualifier and the Big West runner-up in the 800m. He clocked a freshman school-record 1:48.10 in the conference final. His time ranks fourth in program history and was the fastest among Big West freshmen this season.

Cordero had four 800m individual victories on the year, including in his first three collegiate races. He cracked UC Irvine's all-time top-10 in his second meet with a time of 1:48.88 at the Challenge Cup. The Chula Vista native would beat that mark two more times, running 1:48.69 at the Bryan Clay Invitational before his PR at the Big West Championships.

Cordero is the second Anteater to be named the Big West Men's Freshman of the Year, joining Lloyd Sicard, who won the award in 2014.
