TEMPE, Ariz. – The UC Irvine men's tennis team won two of their three doubles matches, while Tal Goodman advanced in the singles main draw to highlight Friday's action at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships at Kiwanis Tennis Center.
 
In doubles, Mason Bui and Nathaniel Suh teamed up to defeat UC San Diego's Prathinav Cunduru/Yaron Guberman, 8-5. Sohrob Amiryavari and Max Fardanesh also took down Ivaylo Simeonov/Lucas Mszyca of UC Riverside, 8-4. Both Anteater duos will move on to tomorrow's Round of 32. Tal Goodman/Hiroki Sakagawa are set to join them after receiving a first-round bye.
 
In the singles main draw, Tal Goodman outlasted a Big West foe to advance out of the Round of 64. Goodman bounced back from a first-set loss to defeat UC Santa Barbara's Carson Lee, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
 
Hiroki Sakagawa put up a fight against Glib Sekachov of Arizona, but came up short in a second-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 7-6 (6). Max Fardanesh, Greg Gamal, and Ruining Huang all faced ranked opponents after making it through Thursday's qualifying draw. Fardanesh fell to No. 19 Spencer Johnson of UCLA, while Gamal dropped a straight-set decision to the Bruins' No. 70 Aadarsh Tripathi. Huang took the first set off No. 65 Azuma Visaya of Hawai'i, but Visaya responded for the 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory.
 
The 'Eaters won three of their four extra matches in singles. Sohrob Amiryavari made quick work of the Rainbow Warriors' Adriano Dzhenev, 6-0, 6-3. Alex Guajardo added a straight-set victory over Lucas Ibarrandon Suarez of UC Riverside, 6-1, 6-3. Nathaniel Suh rounded out the trio with a gritty 5-7, 6-3, 10-4 triumph against Kent Mueller (UH).
 
UC Irvine continues play at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Saturday, Oct. 18.
