Farmer in First, Daniels Second After Day 1 of Big West Decathlon

SAN LUIS OBISO, Calif. - Senior Josh Farmer and junior Max Daniels hold the top two spots in the decathlon standings after the first day of the 2024 Big West Multi-Event Championship Friday at Miller & Capriotti Athletic Complex.
 
Farmer is in the lead with 4,017 points. He opened the two-day meet with a time of 10.92 seconds in the 100m. Farmer then won the next three events, starting in the long jump where he had the top mark at 7.04 meters (23-1.25). He followed with a strong series in the shot put, going for over 13 meters on all three attempts. His best of the day came on his third and final throw where he hit 13.69m (44-11). The San Diego native was also the only athlete in the competition to clear the high jump bar at 1.93m (6-4). Farmer closed out the afternoon with the second-fastest 400m, clocking in at 48.87.  
 
Daniels is second behind Farmer with 3,892 points. In the first event of the competition, Daniels led the pack with a 100m personal-record 10.61, which is tied for eighth in school history. He was among the top-five finishers in the remaining four events. He had marks of 6.91m/22-8 in the long jump (3rd) and 12.84m/42-1.5 in the shot put (5th), before clearing a lifetime-best 1.87m/6-1.5 in the high jump (4th). Making his way back onto the track for the fifth and final event of the day, Daniels crossed the 400m finish line in 50.17.
 
Farmer and Daniels will be back in action tomorrow for five more events, starting with the 110m hurdles at 9:30 a.m.
