
Men's Tennis Headed to No. 4 TCU for NCAA First Round

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's tennis team is headed to Fort Worth, Texas, to open the NCAA Tournament against host and fourth-seeded TCU in a first-round match on Friday, May 3.
The Anteaters and Horned Frogs are scheduled to square off at 5 p.m. (CT)/3 p.m. (PT), or 30 minutes after the conclusion of a 2 p.m. (CT) meeting between Arkansas (21-11) and Cornell (18-6). The winners advance to the second round on Saturday, May 4. All matches will be played at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The 'Eaters (17-7) earned The Big West's automatic bid after winning their fifth conference tournament title and second in the last three years. As the No. 2 seed, UCI defeated No. 3 Cal Poly, 4-1, in the semifinals before upending top-seeded and 45th-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 4-1, in the championship match. This will be UC Irvine's 13th NCAA Division I Championship appearance.
UCI brings a four-match win streak into the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Individually, junior Noah Zamora has a team-best 15 dual-match singles victories. He is 7-0 in his last nine outings.
Freshman Andy Nguyen is also 12-3, while graduate student Enrique Luque Rico is 11-5 at the top of the lineup. Graduate student Hiroki Sakagawa (11-6), who clinched both matches at the 2024 Big West Men's Tennis Championship, junior Lawee Sherif (10-3) and junior Rithvik Krishna (10-5) have also reached double digits in the win column. As a team, the 'Eaters are 86-31 (.735) in singles.
TCU (22-4), which is ranked fourth in the nation, received an at-large bid after falling to No. 5 Texas in the Big 12 Championship. The Horned Frogs earned a national seed for the fourth-straight year and are making their 34th overall NCAA appearance.
TCU has five ranked singles players, led by three-time All-American Jake Fearnley, who is seventh in the nation. Fearnley owns an 11-2 record, including a 10-1 mark at the top of the lineup. Jack Pinnington is also 11th in the country as he is 15-4 with a 9-2 record at No. 1 singles.
UCI and TCU last met in 2011, when the Horned Frogs edged the Anteaters, 4-3, in Irvine.
