Jacob Hawkins has been named the Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.

Hawkins was a double champion in the shot put and discus, and broke a 41-year-old school record in the latter event at the Challenge Cup on March 15.

On his first attempt in the finals, and fourth throw of the day, Hawkins unleashed a lifetime-best 59.03 meters (193-8) to win the discus. He topped UCI's previous standard of 58.44m, which was set by Ken Mills back in 1983.

Hawkins added an individual victory in the shot put where he registered a personal-best 17.83m (58-6) to rank fifth in program history. He scored 18 points for the Anteaters, who took second in a meet that featured three other Big West schools.

Hawkins ranks first in The Big West, third in the West Region and fourth in the nation in the discus. He is also second in the conference, 11th in the West Region and 20th in the nation in the shot put.
