Miksic Wins Big West Javelin Title on Final Day in Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. - Liam Miksic made history as UC Irvine's first Big West men's javelin champion Saturday at Titan Track Complex.
 
Miksic took the early lead, opening with a toss of 61.85m (202-11). He saw a nearly four-foot improvement on his second throw before UC Santa Barbara's Brad Thomas jumped out front in the third round of Flight 2. Miksic remained in second heading into his sixth and final attempt. Needing a big mark, he delivered with a season-best 64.23m (210-8) to claim the title. Miksic ended up throwing over 202 feet four times in the competition.
 
Julian Sotelo added a point in the javelin, coming in eighth with a best of 55.88m (183-4).
 
In the shot put, Justin Willingham missed the podium by less than a foot, finishing fourth overall with a toss of 16.88m (55-4.75). Quincy Stokes was also a finalist, placing eighth at 16.55m (54-3.75).
 
Brandon Burns, Malcolm Overbaugh, Eric Parker and Ty Sheridan opened action on the track with a fourth-place showing in the 4x100 relay (41.54).
 
Overbaugh added five individual points in the 100m and 200m. He was sixth in the 100m in a wind-aided personal-record 10.56 before coming back an hour later to run a lifetime-best 21.36 in the 200m (7th).
 
Drew Pickett led the Anteaters in the 110m hurdles, coming in sixth at 14.38, while Maxwell Jefferson was eighth in a personal-record 14.47.
 
Cameron Smith, who scored in the steeplechase yesterday, contributed two more points in the 5000m where he took seventh in 14:58.04.
 
Overbaugh, Parker, Jake Preston and Sheridan then closed out the meet in the 4x400 relay, placing fifth in a season-best 3:13.67.

As a team, UC Irvine finished sixth with 55 points. Cal State Fullerton (184.5) claimed its third-straight conference title, while Long Beach State was two points behind in second.
