2022 Women's Tennis Season Preview
January 19, 2022 | Women's Tennis
IRVINE, Calif. --- Tennis dual season gets going this week with head coach Elizabeth Ferris back for her sixth season at the helm of UCI women's tennis.
The Anteaters tout a veteran squad as the season begins with five seniors, one junior, and two sophomores returning to the court. UCI will tout no freshmen with its only newcomer a graduate transfer in Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico from the Division III level.
Gonzalez-Rico comes to the program as a grad transfer studying for her master's in business analytics. The eight returning undergraduates have an exciting array of majors they are working toward such as biological sciences, biomedical engineering, neurobiology, business economics, international studies, criminology, law, & society, business administration, and a double major in business administration and economics.
Singles
Singles players from last season from the first five positions are back with Gonzalez-Rico the newcomer and senior captain and 2021 No. 1 Jessica Tsukiji competing for the 'Eaters' at the top of the lineup. Tsukiji played all of her matches at No. 1 last season earning one win.
In the mix for the three and four slots are senior and first-time captain Alyssia Fossorier and junior Jenna Schlatter. The pair played all their singles matches between positions 2, 3, and 4 accounting for four singles points. Schlatter comes in with a .500 dual match singles record in her two years while Fossorier topped 20 career singles wins last year.
The lineup is completed with the likes of sophomore Emily Fowler and senior Dasee Carter in prime position to play at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Both earned multiple singles wins in 2020-21 at the 5 and 6 positions and they joust for positioning. Mia Totah made an appearance in her freshman season and will compete for singles play, and seniors Megan Mansonhing and Shreya Pavani will also get looks with the composition of coach Ferris' schedule.
Doubles
Doubles are fairly solid according to coach Ferris with Fossorier and Tsukiji partnering at No. 1 like they did for most of 2021. Schlatter will pair with Gonzalez-Rico at No. 2 with Schlatter winning three doubles matches amongst multiple partners and Gonzalez-Rico posting 76 career doubles wins at Emory. The duo of Carter-Fowler return after a 2-5 mark at No. 3 last season
The 2022 Schedule
The season begins this Friday with a hidden dual-style invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton. The 'Eaters join the Titans along with Grand Canyon and San Jose State in the meet in a first visit to this tournament for UCI.
UCI will jump right into Big West play with a trip to UC Davis on the 29th, adding a competitive Santa Clara squad on the trip, the home opener with a tough Grand Canyon squad, and a second Big West matchup at UC San Diego in the first four matches.. UCI's Big West opponents come every couple weeks before a big rush of matchups with five matches over two weeks in April.
Another notable stretch is a three-match trip to Oregon taking on Seattle U and Portland State in Beaverton and a short trip to play at George Fox. George Fox is 1 of 7 lower-division opponents that coach Ferris will use as internal competition for the team and get all players opportunities.
Early March begins a monthlong stretch of home matches for the Anteaters which includes schools like Idaho, Illinois State coming off a 20-win season in 2020, and an always-tough Weber State being led by coach Ferris' coach from her college career, RuthAnn Allen.
