March 12, 2021 | Women's Track & Field
FULLERTON, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's track & field team had seven top-five finishes Friday at the Ben Brown Invitational, which is their 2021 season opener, and first meet in over a year.
Senior Brianna Villanueva and junior Tayla Crenshaw were the top-two in the hammer throw. Villanueva opened the season with a toss of 173-11 on her first attempt in Flight 2. That mark held as the best of the meet through five more rounds as she took home the individual title. Crenshaw was the runner-up at 168-08, while she also had a third-place showing in the discus (146-00).
In the shot put, freshman Deandra Tyler came in fourth at 42-09.75, which is the seventh-best mark in school history.
Freshmen Carly Johnson (119-04) and Phoebe Roach (10-04.25) made their collegiate debuts with sixth-place showings in the javelin and pole vault, respectively.
On the track, junior Hannah Chau placed fifth overall in the 5000m with a personal-record 16:54.40. Her 5K time is UCI's fastest since 2009, and ranks eighth among the program's all-time top-10.
Sophomore Cathy Salazar-Gasca led a quartet of 'Eaters in the 1500m, clocking in at 4:45.32 (4th). Senior Daisy Garcia (4:57.90) and sophomore Nikki Fulcomer (4:59.14) added lifetime bests in the event.
