'Eaters Host Two Non-Conference Matches

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's tennis team is set to play Villanova and Louisiana Tech at home this week.
The 'Eaters take on Villanova Thursday at 10:00 a.m. followed by Louisiana Tech Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Both matches will be played at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
STORYLINES
• UC Irvine has won three of its last four matchups heading in to this weekend
• The Anteaters dropped their second Big West match of the season to UC Davis 2-5
• Last Saturday, UCI swept UC Santa Cruz 9-0
• Alyssia Fossorier went unbeaten in her two doubles matches and one singles match
• Stephanie Nguyen and Fossorier remain unbeaten in the No. 2 doubles spot
• Jessica Tsukiji and Jenna Schlatter won both of their singles matches this weekend
• Three returning Anteaters earned Scholar-Athlete accolades last year including Dasee Carter, Shreya Pavani and Tsukiji.
• UCI as a team overall, earned a 3.4 GPA for last year and were named an ITA All-Academic Team.
• Three Anteaters earned Big West Honors last year. Nguyen was named honorable mention in singles while the duo of Tsukiji and Flora Amiri earned honorable mention in doubles.
• Head coach Elizabeth Ferris is in her fourth year at the head of Women's Tennis team.
• Halla Alajeely is a transfer from Irvine Valley College where she was a JUCO All-American in Singles and Doubles
• Schlatter is the only freshman on the team
• 12 out of the 13 Anteaters are from California while Fossorier is from Hawaii.
LAST TIME OUT
> UC Irvine went 1-1 this past weekend beating UC Santa Cruz before dropping to Big West foe UC Davis.
> The 'Eaters won the match up against UCSC 9-0. All matches went only the minimum amount of games and 7 of the 9 matches never had a game go past 6-2
> The following day, UCI took on UC Davis and lost 2-5. Nguyen and Fossorier won their doubles match to remain unbeaten at the No. 2 doubles spot
> After the No. 1 and 3 doubles tandems lost, UC Davis secured the doubles point.
> Tsukiji and Schlatter won their singles matches to keep them unbeaten in singles for the weekend
BACK HOME
UC Irvine returns home for the start of a 3-match home stand. The first two matches of that home stand are against Villanova and Louisiana Tech.
The 'Eaters faced Villanova last season. UCI took the doubles point and split the singles matches 3-3 for a 4-3 overall victory. Tilbury clinched the match last year for the Anteaters. UCI had already clinched the match with Villanova took two more points to bring the match closer.
This is a first time match up for UC Irvine and Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs face three Big West opponents on a brief road trip. Louisiana Tech plays CSUN on Thursday, Cal Poly on Friday, and UC Irvine on Sunday.
SCOUTING VILLANOVA
Villanova is 5-1 on the season with its only loss to Navy. The Wildcats are doing a Southern California tour playing UC Riverside on Monday and Point Loma on Wednesday before facing UC Irvine on Thursday. Villanova is off to their best start in over 22 seasons. Caitlin Fisher has been leading the team from the No. 5 and 6 singles spot. She is unbeaten on the season.
SCOUTING LOUISIANA TECH
Louisiana Tech is 9-7 on the season. The Bulldogs have won two of their last three match ups. They face three Big West teams this weekend in CSUN, Cal Poly, and UC Irvine. Ana Jover leads the Bulldogs with a 20-8 overall singles record. Jover also has the best doubles record where she is a combined 17-9 with three different partners.
FALL HIGHLIGHTS
UCI competed in four tournaments during the fall season. The 'Eaters started the tournament schedule off at the Long Beach Invitational with Alyssia Fossorier, Dana Mackensen, Jacqueline Tsodikova and Dasee Carter getting their first wins of the year.
The Anteaters would then play at the ITA Southwest Regional Tournament with four players earning wins at the tournament.
The team would then go on to play at the Jack Kramer Invitational with Stephanie Nguyen and Halla Alajeely claiming singles wins at the tournament.
The 'Eaters finished their tournament play at the SDSU Fall Classic II which saw the weekend be highlighted by Alyssia Fossorier who won the championship in her flight.
MEET THE NEWCOMERS
The UCI Women's Tennis team welcomes back eleven players from last year while only bringing in two new players. Junior Halla Alajeely is a transfer from Irvine Valley College where she was a JUCO All-American in singles and doubles as well as the ITA Rookie of the Year in 2018. Freshman Jenna Schlatter comes from Saint Helena, Calif and is a four-star recruit and the only freshman on the team.
