Anteaters Prepare for Three-Match Weekend

IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's tennis team begins a busy weekend with a 1:30 P.M. match against Nevada on Friday, Feb. 7 at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The 'Eaters will also play Grand Canyon at home and Hope International on the road at 11 A.M. and 2:30 P.M., respectively, on Saturday, Feb. 8.
STORYLINES
UCI competed in four tournaments during the fall season. The 'Eaters started the tournament schedule off at the Long Beach Invitational with Alyssia Fossorier, Dana Mackensen, Jacqueline Tsodikova and Dasee Carter getting their first wins of the year.
The Anteaters would then play at the ITA Southwest Regional Tournament with four players earning wins at the tournament.
The team went on to play at the Jack Kramer Invitational with Stephanie Nguyen and Halla Alajeely claiming singles wins at the tournament.
The 'Eaters finished tournament play at the SDSU Fall Classic II. The weekend was highlighted by Alyssia Fossorier who won the championship in her flight
THE OPPONENTS
The UCI Women's Tennis team welcomes back eleven players from last year while only bringing in two new players. Junior Halla Alajeely is a transfer from Irvine Valley College where she was a JUCO All-American in singles and doubles as well as the ITA Rookie of the Year in 2018. Freshman Jenna Schlatter comes from Saint Helena, Calif and is a four-star recruit and the only freshman on the team.

- Jessica Tsukiji is undefeated in dual-match singles this season with a 2-0 record
- Three returning Anteaters earned Scholar-Athlete accolades last year including Dasee Carter, Shreya Pavani and Jessica Tsukiji
- UCI as a team overall, earned a 3.4 GPA for last year and were named an ITA All-Academic Team
- Three Anteaters earned Big West Honors last year. Stephanie Nguyen was named honorable mention in singles while the duo of Jessica Tsukiji and Flora Amiri earned honorable mention in doubles
- Head coach Elizabeth Ferris is in her fourth year at the head of Women's Tennis team.
- Halla Alajeely is a transfer from Irvine Valley College where she was a JUCO All-American in Singles and Doubles
- Jenna Schlatter is the only freshman on the team
- 12 out of the 13 Anteaters are from California while Alyssia Fossorier is from Hawaii.
- The 'Eaters are coming off a 1-6 loss against Hawai'i last Saturday.
- Jessica Tsujiki took the No. 3 singles point for the Anteaters winning both sets 6-2
- Alyssa Fossorier had a hard fought battle in the No. 5 spot having the decisive third set concluding 8-10
- The 'Eaters had a repeat result against Hawai'i. They lost the only match up of last season against Hawai'i 1-6. The match was also in Irvine

THE OPPONENTS
- Nevada played two games in Santa Clara last week losing to Cal Poly, 0-4, and beating host Santa Clara, 4-2
- After battling UCI on Friday, the Wolfpack will play Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton on Saturday before returning to Irvine to play Grand Canyon
- Nevada's roster is entirely composed of international players
- Five of the eight players are from Russia
- The remaining three players are from Spain, Australia, and the Netherlands
- Grand Canyon comes off a visit to Missoula, Montana, splitting a pair of games to finish the weekend 1-1
- Nevada's roster is either international or from the Phoenix metropolitan area
- Six of the nine players are international with half of those international players coming from Italy
- Hope International comes off a 0-7 loss at UC Riverside and a 6-1 win against the University of Saint Katherine
- The Royals are undefeated at home so far this year
- Hope International's roster is all upper classmen except for one freshman
