UCI Heads to Northern California For Pair of Matches

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's tennis team is set to play UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis on the road this weekend.
The 'Eaters take on UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 11 a.m. and UC Davis at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Mar. 1.
STORYLINES
• UC Irvine has won three of its last four matchups going into the weekend
• Last Saturday's matchup against CSUN was postponed due to impending weather
• On Thursday, the Anteaters swept UC San Diego 4-0. The unfinished matches were all in winning positions for the Anteaters
• Jessica Tsukiji performed well against UC San Diego winning her doubles match with partner Jenna Schlatter 6-3, 6-1.Tsukiji won her singles match 6-1
• Stephanie Nguyen and Alyssa Fossorier remain unbeaten in the No. 2 doubles spot
• Three returning Anteaters earned Scholar-Athlete accolades last year including Dasee Carter, Shreya Pavani and Jessica Tsukiji
• UCI as a team overall, earned a 3.4 GPA for last year and were named an ITA All-Academic Team
• Three Anteaters earned Big West Honors last year. Stephanie Nguyen was named honorable mention in singles while the duo of Jessica Tsukiji and Flora Amiri earned honorable mention in doubles
• Head coach Elizabeth Ferris is in her fourth year at the head of Women's Tennis team.
• Halla Alajeely is a transfer from Irvine Valley College where she was a JUCO All-American in Singles and Doubles
• Jenna Schlatter is the only freshman on the team
• 12 out of the 13 Anteaters are from California while Alyssia Fossorier is from Hawaii.
LAST TIME OUT
UC Irvine swept UC San Diego with the three unfinished matches also in a winning position. Tsukiji highlighted several strong performances against UC San Diego. She won her doubles and singles match in dominant fashion. Tsukiji and Schlatter won their doubles match first followed by Nguyen and Fossorier who continue to be unbeatean as a doubles tandem.
Tsukiji started UCI winning the singles matches with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Senior Ariana Tilbury then won her match 6-4, 6-3 followed by Schlatter who won her match 6-3, 6-2. The three unfinished matches had Anteaters either ahead on sets or tied on sets but ahead in the third set.
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA VISIT
UCI head up to UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz this weekend. UC Davis will be a familiar Big West opponent. The 'Eaters played the Aggies last year to a tight 4-3 finish. Tilbury was the deciding point last year.
This will be the first time the Anteaters and Banana Slugs women's tennis teams face off in a battle of unique mascots.
SCOUTING UC SANTA CRUZ
UC Santa Cruz is 2-3 on the season but have won all four exhibition matchups they have played. The Banana Slugs are a DIII school. UCSC is very young with no seniors. Junior Savana McDowell has played all over for UC Santa Cruz. She has seen action at the No. 4, 5, and 6 singles as well as the No. 1 doubles.
SCOUTING UC DAVIS
UC Davis is 4-7 on the season but has lost its last six matchups including three against Big West foes. The Aggies are led by Junior Sara Tsukamoto who has a team best 12-9 singles record and co-best 11-7 doubles record. Senior Kristina Breisacher is also a top performer with a 9-7 singles record and 11-7 doubles record.
FALL HIGHLIGHTS
UCI competed in four tournaments during the fall season. The 'Eaters started the tournament schedule off at the Long Beach Invitational with Alyssia Fossorier, Dana Mackensen, Jacqueline Tsodikova and Dasee Carter getting their first wins of the year.
The Anteaters would then play at the ITA Southwest Regional Tournament with four players earning wins at the tournament.
The team would then go on to play at the Jack Kramer Invitational with Stephanie Nguyen and Halla Alajeely claiming singles wins at the tournament.
The 'Eaters finished their tournament play at the SDSU Fall Classic II which saw the weekend be highlighted by Alyssia Fossorier who won the championship in her flight.
MEET THE NEWCOMERS
The UCI Women's Tennis team welcomes back eleven players from last year while only bringing in two new players. Junior Halla Alajeely is a transfer from Irvine Valley College where she was a JUCO All-American in singles and doubles as well as the ITA Rookie of the Year in 2018. Freshman Jenna Schlatter comes from Saint Helena, Calif and is a four-star recruit and the only freshman on the team.

UC Irvine returns to Anteater Tennis Stadium in two weeks when it kicks off a 10-match homestand against Villanova (March 4) and Bucknell (March 8).
