‘Eaters Defeat the Beach on Day One of Barbara Kalbus Invite

IRVINE, Calif. – No. 6 UC Irvine took down No. 12 Long Beach State, 12-9, Friday afternoon at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
The Anteaters grabbed their 10th win of the season, improving to 10-4 overall. LBSU dropped to 7-3 on the year.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
> Tara Prentice finished with a hat trick, leading the team with three goals
> Toni Shackelford and Megan Falcon fired in two goals apiece while Sarah Nichols, Piper Smith, Elena Flynn, Jessica Lynch and Isabel Rack each had one
> In goal, Morgan Jones grabbed 11 saves, three steals and dished out two assists
> Both teams finished 1-10 on powerplays while the 'Eaters were 1-1 on five-meter penalties
> Elena Kotanchyan led the Beach with a game-high four goals. Eirini Patra made 10 saves in the cage

> UCI jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Prentice fired in back-to-back goals. Her second came on a made five-meter penalty shot
> LBSU answered with two-straight goals before Smith scored on a powerplay and Shackelford fired in a goal with 22 seconds remaining to give UCI a 4-2 lead
Quarter Two
> The teams exchanged back-and-forth goals to open the second frame to make it 5-3 (4:22)
> The Beach scored at 4:02 to come within one, 5-4, before Danielle Ayala fed a pass to Rack who fired in a goal at 1:36
> UCI took a 6-4 lead into halftime
Quarter Three
> UCI came out of the break with two quick goals from Falcon (5:19) and Prentice (2:06)
> Kotanchyan answered, scoring twice for the Beach to keep it a two-point game, 8-6, heading into the fourth quarter
Quarter Four
> Flynn and Shackelford each had a goal to give UCI a 10-6 lead with 5:36 to play
> The Beach did not back down as they scored two more to bring the game within two, 10-6 (4:03)
> Jones threw a long pass to Nichols who fired in a goal at 2:47. Another UCI goal from Lynch at 2:19 gave the 'Eaters a 12-8 lead
> LBSU would score on a five-meter penalty with 19 seconds remaining as UCI earned the 12-9 win
