Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Alex Croteau

Overtime Strike Drops Anteaters, 1-0

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer played dead even with visiting UCF falling just on a spectacular flurry in overtime, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Anteater Stadium

Checkers and Chess
Two goalless halves were not completely lost as each squad put together plenty of chances. UC Irvine (1-8-0) had a pair of opportunities within the first 10 minutes of the match. Alex Jaquez was a pest in UCF's box putting up three first half shots, two on target. UCF (5-1-2) put Maddie Newsom to the test with a blast near the end of the half, but no goals to show

After halftime, it turned into a chess match with nothing on the attack until the 73rd minute as Erin Covey whistled a ball by the upper corner of the goal. Sara Young added a laser shot that needed a big, diving save from UCF keeper Caroline DeLisle, and the sides needed overtime to decide it

Third Times A Charm
The game-winning goal was more notable for the defensive effort. In the 99th minute, the ball settled in the box at Elise Legrout's feet who fired on goal. Newsom knocked it away right to Kristen Scott. Newsom leapt back across goal after she was out of position to make a miraculous save on Scott's shot. The second rebound, unfortunately, also found Scott and she was able to thread it over Newsom and by the Anteater defense giving UCF the sudden death victory, 1-0

Final Score: UCF 1, UC Irvine 0
The match ebbed and flowed pretty well between the two evenly-matched sides. UCF came away with more shots, 13-7, including a 10-7 advantage in regulation. They also fired nine on target which Newsom was there to save eight of them, one off a career high. UCF also took a slight advantage in fouls and corners

UCI put three shots on frame with DeLisle able to save all of them. One was from Sara Young, her first ever, as the junior was making her first career start. Another first in the match came from Caitlin Sanchez who played 27 minutes off the bench in her first collegiate action. The 'Eaters were also without a pair of starters in Gianna Creighton and Scarlett Camberos both due to concussion protocol.

Final Frontier
The 'Eaters head out on the road next for their final non-conference matchup traveling to top-10 BYU on Saturday, September 28.
