LAST TIME OUT
UC Irvine will be looking to bounce back from a tough 7-0 loss at BYU last week. The Cougars started the match with the early 1-0 lead, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. After Jacqueline Tsodikova/Arianna Tilbury fell short on court two, Alyssia Fossorier and Stephanie Nguyen evened the playing field with a 6-3 win over Taylah Beckman/Samantha Smith. It then came down to the top of the lineup where Flora Amiri and Jessica Tsukiji were locked in a tight battle before ultimately dropping a 7-6 (5) decision. In singles, Nguyen, Amiri, Tsukiji and Fossorier all pushed their opponents to three sets at Nos. 1-4, respectively, but were unable to emerge with the win.
"Overall, our match against BYU was a challenging match that not only pushed us mentally but physically too," Fossorier said. "I was really proud of how our team stepped up, battled, and gave it their all. Although the score doesn't show it, I believe this match really toughened us up for our upcoming matches."
THE OPPONENTS
Hope International (7-12) brings a two-match win streak to Irvine. The Anteaters are 2-0 all-time against the Royals, winning 5-0 in 2018 and 7-0 in 2017.
Cal State Fullerton (11-4, 3-1 Big West) saw its three-match win streak snapped at No. 11 USC last week, falling 5-2 to the Trojans. Since 2000, UCI is 17-3 against the Titans, but has come up short in each of the last three meetings.
CSUN (11-4, 1-4 Big West) has been dominant in front of their home crowd with a 9-1 record at the Matador Tennis Complex. They have won eight of their last 10, including a 7-0 victory over Eastern Washington last week. In 2018, CSUN defeated UCI, 5-2, but the 'Eaters still lead the all-time series, 18-4.
POISED UNDER PRESSURE
UC Irvine is 3-1 in matches decided by one point this year. In early March, the Anteaters earned back-to-back 4-3 wins against Villanova and Louisiana. On Feb. 16, they also upended UC Davis, 4-3, for their first victory over the Aggies since 2016. The 'Eaters won the doubles point, but UCD came back to knot the score at 3-3 in singles. It all came down to court six where Arianna Tilbury clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-2 triumph over Jessica Walker. UCI's only 4-3 loss was at Siena in the fall (Oct. 6).
TSUKIJI HEATING UP IN SINGLES PLAY
Freshman Jessica Tsukiji recently saw her six-match win streak in singles come to an end at BYU on March 28. Her 6-0, 5-7, 6-0 setback was her first loss since Feb. 15. Tsukiji is still undefeated when playing at No. 1 and No. 2, and currently holds a 10-2 record.
YOUNG GUNS
UC Irvine has a young team with seven underclassmen, including six freshmen. Making an immediate impact in their first collegiate seasons are Jessica Tsukiji and Alyssia Fossorier, who are tops on the team in singles and doubles victories, respectively. The 'Eaters do have strong leadership coming from their six upperclassmen, including seniors Stephanie Hazell and Danielle Garrido.
LOCAL KIDS
Twelve of the 13 Anteaters on the roster are California products. Fossorier is the lone non-California native as she hails from Honolulu, Hawaii.
OCTOBER SUCCESS
In their nine fall dual matches, the Anteaters combined to go 41-10 in singles and 21-5 in doubles. Flora Amiri, Danielle Garrido and Gillian Parker tied for the team lead with five singles wins each. Arianna Tilbury saw the most success in doubles with six victories, playing at the top two spots.

UC Irvine will head to the Central Coast for three matches in three days next week. The Anteaters begin the stretch at non-conference foe Westmont (April 12), before returning to Big West action at UC Santa Barbara (April 13) and at Cal Poly (April 14).
