'Eaters Host Long Beach State in Regular-Season Finale

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's tennis team will conclude the regular season at home, hosting Long Beach State in a Black & Blue Rivalry match on Friday, April 19. First serve will be at 2 p.m. at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
STORYLINES
• UC Irvine has bettered its win total from each of the last three years.
• The Anteaters reached double digits in the win column for the first time since a 15-9 campaign in 2014-15.
• UCI is unbeaten at 13-0 when winning the doubles point.
• As a team, the 'Eaters have a win percentage of .590 in singles (79-55) and .600 in doubles (39-26).
• UC Irvine is 3-2 in dual matches decided by one point.
• Freshman Jessica Tsukiji is 6-0 when competing at No. 1 and No. 2 and leads the team with 12 singles victories.

LAST TIME OUT
UC Irvine started a three-match road trip with a 6-3 non-conference win over Westmont College on Friday, April 12. The Anteaters earned two of their points in doubles and won four of six in singles. The Warriors started singles play by pulling even at 2-2, but the 'Eaters then reeled off three consecutive victories. Jessica Tsukiji defeated Isabel Lee, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2, while Alyssia Fossorier dispatched Taylor Cheung-Damonte, 6-0, 6-2, at the third spot. Arianna Tilbury then completed an impressive comeback, taking down Emily Peterson, 6-7, 6-0, 10-3, to clinch he match. Gillian Parker added a 7-5, 6-1 triumph at No. 6.
The 'Eaters continued their weekend with two conference match-ups that didn't end in their favor. On Saturday, UCI fell to Big West-leading UC Santa Barbara, 5-1. Tilbury came away with a forfeit win as UCSB was unable to field a player due to injury at No. 6 singles.
On Sunday, UC Irvine dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision at Cal Poly. The Mustangs won the doubles point and pulled ahead 3-0 in singles before the Anteaters started to rally. Stephanie Nguyen got the visitors on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Susanne Boyden at No. 2, and then Tilbury earned a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 6. Fossorier was also locked in a three-set battle but ended up falling, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 on court five. Tsukiji would account for the final point, upending Caroline Williams, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, at the fourth position.
THE OPPONENTS
Long Beach State (13-5, 5-2 Big West) is tied for second in the league standings. The Beach is coming off a 4-2 non-conference loss at Loyola Marymount on Wednesday, April 17. UCI will be looking to snap a seven-match skid in its all-time series with LBSU as its last win came on March 2, 2013, when the 'Eaters upset the 38th-ranked 49ers.
POISED UNDER PRESSURE
UC Irvine has won three of its five matches that have been decided by one point this year. In early March, the Anteaters earned back-to-back 4-3 wins against Villanova and Louisiana. On Feb. 16, they also upended UC Davis, 4-3, for their first victory over the Aggies since 2016. The 'Eaters won the doubles point, but UCD came back to knot the score at 3-3 in singles. It all came down to court six where Arianna Tilbury clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-2 triumph over Jessica Walker.
TSUKIJI LEADING THE WAY
Freshman Jessica Tsukiji won two of her three singles matches last week, improving to a team-best 12-4 on the year. Six of her victories came during an unbeaten stretch from Feb. 16-March 24. Tsukiji has played at Nos. 1-4, and is 6-0 at the top two positions.
YOUNG GUNS
UC Irvine has a young team with seven underclassmen, including six freshmen. Making an immediate impact in their first collegiate seasons are Jessica Tsukiji and Alyssia Fossorier, who are tops on the team in singles and doubles victories, respectively. The 'Eaters do have strong leadership coming from their six upperclassmen, including seniors Stephanie Hazell and Danielle Garrido.
LOCAL KIDS
Twelve of the 13 Anteaters on the roster are California products. Fossorier is the lone non-California native as she hails from Honolulu, Hawaii.
OCTOBER SUCCESS
In their nine fall dual matches, the Anteaters combined to go 41-10 in singles and 21-5 in doubles. Flora Amiri, Danielle Garrido and Gillian Parker tied for the team lead with five singles wins each. Arianna Tilbury saw the most success in doubles with six victories, playing at the top two spots.
