LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The distance runners got the weekend started for the UC Irvine men's track & field team with the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival Friday evening at UCLA's Drake Stadium.
Junior Sam Ayala led the way as he finished fourth out of 20 competitors in the 5000m Invite. Ayala ran a personal-record 14:35.10, improving his previous best by over 30 seconds.
Junior Hector Garcia took fourth in the mile, crossing the finish line in 4:17.36. He was just one second shy of his lifetime best in the event.
In the 5000m Open, senior Ashton Garcia was ninth in a 32-man field (15:15.70). Freshman Sebastian Bautista also notched a season-best 15:26.27 to place 15th.
Senior Jon Rodriguez added a season-best 9:38.82 in the 3000m steeplechase.
The Anteaters return to Drake Stadium tomorrow for the Jim Bush Legends Invitational.
