UC Irvine Tops Pomona-Pitzer, 19-3, for Fifth-Straight Win

POMONA, Calif. - The eighth-ranked UC Irvine women's water polo team extended its win streak to five with a convincing 19-3 victory over host Pomona-Pitzer in their second and final game of the Claremont Convergence tournament Saturday evening at Haldeman Pool.
 
UCI improves to 12-5 on the year, while the Sagehens fall to 5-7.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
> Piper Smith finished with a game-high four goals.
> Isabel Rack, Marissa Echelberger and Tara Prentice chipped in two goals apiece.
> Prentice increased her team-high total to 41 goals.
> Mary Brooks also notched her 33rd goal of the season.
> Seven other Anteaters found the back of the net against the Sagehens.
> The 'Eaters converted on 75 percent of their shot attempts (19-25), including a 4-for-5 performance on power plays.
> Morgan Jones had another solid outing in the cage with nine saves, just two shy of her season high against Wagner on Jan. 19.
> Nohea Kahaulelio scored two of Pomona-Pitzer's three goals.
 
FIRST QUARTER
> Prentice started the scoring with her first goal at the 7:37 mark.  
> Smith then converted on a power play and Prentice followed with a penalty shot to put the 'Eaters up 3-0.
> Brooks, Raegan Castillo and Echelberger added to UC Irvine's lead by the end of the period.
> Castillo's goal came off an assist from Prentice in transition.
> UCI posted an .857 (6-7) shot percentage through the first eight minutes.
 
SECOND QUARTER
> The Anteaters pulled ahead, 11-0, before Pomona-Pitzer got on the board.
> Rack beat the keeper to the far post less than two minutes into the frame.
> Smith then found the back of the net at 5:04 and 3:32.
> Just 21 seconds after Smith's second goal of the quarter, Rylee Williams connected on a skip shot.
> Danielle Ayala tacked on one more before the Sagehens' Nohea Kahaulelio closed out the half with a pair of goals.
 
THIRD QUARTER
> The 'Eaters outscored the Sagehens, 3-1, in the third to go on top, 14-3.
> Rack notched her second tally of the night with 7:21 remaining.
> Smith followed by putting away her fourth goal at the 4:02 mark.
> Pomona-Pitzer then scored before Sarah Nichols responded with 27 seconds on the clock.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
> The Anteaters held the home team scoreless over the final eight minutes, while recording four goals of their own.
> Ariana Bockstahler, Jessica Lynch, Kayleigh Schultz and Echelberger made their way into the scoring column in the fourth.

> UC Irvine will be back at Anteater Aquatics Complex next Thursday, March 7, when it hosts No. 1 USC at 6 p.m.
