IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine women's basketball has signed Victoria Baker and Caiyle Kaupu to National Letters of Intent head coach Tamara Inoue announced Wednesday afternoon.
Victoria Baker (Austin, Texas), a 5-foot-9 point guard, is in her senior year at Vista Ridge High School. As a junior, Baker averaged 12.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.0 steals per game. She led the Lady Rangers to the 2019 6A regional semifinals, and was named her district's Offensive MVP. The two-time first-team all-district selection was also tabbed the 2018 Newcomer of the Year after putting up 11.5 ppg and 3.2 apg. Baker plays club for CyFair Premier Austin.
"I couldn't be more excited about Victoria joining our family," Inoue said. "From the first time speaking with her on the phone, I knew we needed her in our program. Her commitment to the classroom and basketball is a perfect fit for UC Irvine. Victoria's versatility, leadership and ability to score around the rim and all the way out to the 3-point line will make a big impact over the next four years."
Caiyle Kaupu (Holualoa, Hawaii) is in her fourth year on the varsity team at Konawaena High School. The 6-foot forward helped the Wildcats claim back-to-back Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) and Hawaii High School Athletic Association State titles as a freshman and sophomore. Kaupu is a three-time first-team All-BIIF and two-time all-state honoree. She has also been recognized as a Star-Advertiser All-State Fab 15 selection three years in a row, and was named to the 2018-19 USA Today ALL-USA Hawaii Girls Basketball Team.
"Caiyle's versatility and strength is always a need in our style of play," Inoue said. "Her high post game is deadly, and with her size, she will have a lot of opportunities to create mismatches for herself. I have enjoyed every minute of getting to know Cailye during the recruiting process, and I am thrilled she chose to be an Anteater."
