SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A trio of Anteaters notched hat tricks in No. 6 UC Irvine's 13-8 victory over No. 14 Wagner at the Gaucho Winter Invitational Saturday.
The Anteaters even their record at 1-1, while Wagner falls to 0-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Mary Brooks, Piper Smith and Kayleigh Schultz each scored three goals to lead the Anteaters
>Marissa Echelberger, Toni Shackelford and Megan Falcon also fired a goal
>Jacqui Sjogren paced the Seahawks with two goals
FIRST QUARTER
>Tara Prentice (2:21) and Kayleigh Schultz (0:48) put UCI up early with a 2-0 lead
SECOND QUARTER
>UCI would sprint out to a 5-0 lead with three more goals, two by Mary Brooks (6:42, 5:29) and one by Piper Smith (6:04) before Wagner got on the board at 5:15, 5-1
>Brooks would complete the hat trick with another goal at 3:34, 6-1
>Following a Wagner goal, Marissa Echelberger would record her first goal of the year at 2:08, 7-2
>The Seahawks would close out the half with a pair of goals as UCI would lead 7-4 at the break
THIRD QUARTER
>Smith would score to open the quarter (7:37), but Wagner responded and closed to 8-5 at 6:29
>Toni Shackelford (5:05) and Megan Falcon (2:40) and Schultz (1:47) put more distance between the teams to close out the period with an 11-5
FOURTH QUARTER
>Wagner would score three straight goals to close to 11-8, but UCI answered with defense and the final two goals by Schultz (3:05) and Smith (1:35) to win 13-8
