William-Mensah Sets Two School Records at NCAA West Prelims

SACRAMENTO - Senior Persis William-Mensah established two school records and advanced to the 200m quarterfinals at the NCAA West Preliminary RoundΒ Friday evening at Hornet Stadium.

William-Mensah was an automatic qualifier in the 200m as she took third in Heat 1 with a personal and program-record 23.56. She shaved .21 seconds off her previous best to set UCI's 200m standard for the fourth time this season. The Costa Mesa native will return to the track tomorrow for the quarterfinal round at 7:50 p.m. The top-three finishers in each heat plus the next three times will punch their ticket to Eugene for the NCAA Championships.

William-Mensah also broke her own 100m school record for the second time this year, running a wind-legal lifetime-best 11.48 in the quarterfinals. She continued to cement her place in school history as she tops the Anteaters' all-time charts by .25 seconds.Β Despite a great race, William-Mensah came up short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships. She placedΒ 19thΒ overall, marking her best finish in three career NCAA West Preliminary appearances.

Junior Barbara Coward was 27th in the discus with a toss of 165-04 on her second attempt. Coward will also be back in action tomorrow in the hammer throw.
