
'Eaters Wrap up Action at NCAA West Preliminaries

SACRAMENTO - The UC Irvine women's track & field team wrapped up action at the NCAA West Preliminaries Saturday at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium.

The 'Eaters were unable to advance out of the regional meet as only the top-12 finishers in each individual event and relay qualified for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 6-9.

Junior Hope Bushnell, senior Persis William-Mensah, junior Julia Sambvani and freshman Mikayla Scott got the evening started in the 4x100 relay. They clocked in at 45.17 to finish fifth in Heat 3 and 18th overall, ending an impressive campaignΒ in which the quartet had three event wins during the regular season. This was the second time in three years the Anteaters made it to the NCAA West Prelims in the 4x100.

William-Mensah also competed in the 200m quarterfinals where she came in 22nd with a time of 23.76. It was her fifth race over a three-day span as she was a regional qualifier in the 100m, 200m and 4x100.

William-Mensah will graduate as UCI's top 100m/200m runner. She is the program's only three-time NCAA West Prelim qualifier in the 100m, while she made tremendous strides in the 200m this season. The Costa Mesa native broke UC Irvine's 200m record five times, including in yesterday's first round when she crossed the finish line in a personal-best 23.56. William-Mensah, who became the first 'Eater to crack the 24-second mark in herΒ season debut back in March, ended up running a sub-24 time in all eight of her races in 2018.

In the 100m, William-Mensah set a school record for the fourth year in a row with a wind-legal best of 11.48. Two weeks ago, she also won the Anteaters' first Big West 100m title since 1996. In addition, William-Mensah was part of the 2016 conference champion 4x100 that established a program-best 44.51.

Junior Barbara Coward was entered in the hammer throw but did not compete due to an injury. She placed 27th in the discus yesterday. The Atwater, Calif., native concludes a stellar season in which she was the Big West champion in the discus and runner-up in the hammer. Coward also notched a program-record 192-03 in the latter event at the Steve Scott Invitational (April 27).
