IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team will be vying for its eighth conference title next week when it heads to the City of Industry for the 2018 Big West Championships, April 29-May 1.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament will start on Sunday at the par-72, 6,989-yard "Ike" Eisenhower Course at Industry Hills Golf Club. One round will be contested each day.
UCI, which enters the Big West Championships as the No. 7 seed, is slated to tee off Sunday at 9:40 a.m., alongside No. 8 CSUN and No. 9 Hawai'i. UC Davis is the No. 1 seed as it is the only Big West member in the top-100 of the most recent Golfstat rankings. The Aggies are grouped with No. 2 UC Santa Barbara and No. 3 Long Beach State, while the third pairing for the first day of action features No. 4 Cal State Fullerton, No. 5 UC Riverside and No. 6 Cal Poly.
The Big West team champion will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals, May 14-16. The NCAA Championships will then be held at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., May 25-30.

UC Irvine has won seven Big West titles with its most recent championship coming in 2015. The 'Eaters have also claimed four individual titles - John Chin (2008, 2010), Mike Lavery (2003) and Ryan Armstrong (2002).
Last year, UCI finished sixth with a three-round total of 870 at Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara. David Kim led the way as he placed eighth overall at 1-under 215. Ryan O'Connor came in 26th (220), Jonathan Young was 32nd (222) and Jonathan Kang was 33rd (223).
LAST TIME OUT
UC Irvine closed out the regular season with a 16th-place finish (894) at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, April 14-15.
Host and 25th-ranked Arizona State shot an 830 to claim the title by one stroke over No. 27 UNLV. No. 3 Oklahoma (833) was third and top-ranked Oklahoma State (835) took fourth.
Senior David Kim (73-76-74), sophomore Jonathan Kang (74-75-74) and junior Ramiz Jamal (75-72-76) all tied for 58th with a 54-hole score of 223. Senior Jonathan Young was also 68th at 225 (74-75-76), while classmate Ryan O'Connor was 77th at 229 (79-77-76). Young had a team-best seven birdies over the two-day tournament.
UNLV's Shintaro Ban and Colorado's Yannik Paul tied for first as they both concluded the weekend at 11-under 202.
NEWS AND NOTES
• UC Irvine has placed among the top-eight in three tournaments this season with a high finish of third at the Sacramento State Invitational where it shot a season-best 871 (March 5-6).
• Senior David Kim has held at least a share of the team lead in every tournament this year. He is tops on the squad with three eagles, 86 birdies and a 72.33 scoring average.
• Kim recorded the first hole-in-one of his collegiate career in the second round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course in Lihu'e, Kaua'i. His ace came with a six-iron on the 178-yard seventh hole.
• The hole-in-one gave him a big boost in the round as he ended up going 5-under on the final four holes for a season-best 66 (-6).
• Kim went on to match that performance with another 6-under 66 in the second round of the Sacramento State Invitational. He was the only golfer to post two sub-70 rounds in the tournament as he registered a total score of 212 (77-66-69) for his second runner-up honor of the year. It was his 14th career top-10 performance.
• Kim's 66 bettered his previous season low by one stroke as he also shot a 67 through the first 18 of the Nick Watney Invitational on Oct. 2. So far this season, he has nine rounds of 70 or better.
• Kim earned his second career Big West Men's Golfer of the Month award for his efforts in October. He was the runner-up at the Bill Cullum Invitational, 18th at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational and 30th at the season-opening Nick Watney Invitational. The reigning Big West Player of the Year was at under-par scoring in five of nine rounds played. Three of those came at the Bill Cullum Invite where Kim shot a 71, 70 and 68 for a 54-hole season-best of 209 (-7).
• Senior Jonathan Young had a career-best seventh-place finish at the Sacramento State Invitational. He put together his most consistent outing of the year with rounds of 73, 71 and 73 to tie his season-best total of 217 (+1). It was his first top-10 performance of the 2017-18 campaign.
• Young also posted back-to-back rounds of 2-under 70 to tie for 21st at the Bill Cullum Invitational (217).
• Senior Ryan O'Connor had his best showing at the Waves Challenge where he came in 16th (231). The Irvine native was also the Anteaters' co-leader at the Nick Watney Invitational, recording a 223 to tie for 30th. He carded a then season-best 73 in the third round to jump 14 spots in the standings on the final day.
• O'Connor matched his career-low of 71 in the first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate (Feb. 15).
• Sophomore Jonathan Kang has played in eight of nine tournaments this year, carding a season-best 220 (75-71-74) at the Saint Mary's Invitational. He also tied for 23rd at the Sacramento State Invitational and tied for 25th at the Waves Challenge.
• On April 7, Kang fired a season-low 69 (-1) in the first round of the Western Intercollegiate. He had three birdies, including two over the final four holes, to offset a pair of bogeys. Kang matched his career-best round as he also shot a 69 as a freshman at the 2016 Bill Cullum Invitational.
• Junior Ramiz Jamal notched a career-low 69 in the first round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational and went on to finish with a season-best 216 (E) to tie for 35th. Jamal added a top-30 showing at the Sacramento State Invitational.
• Eight-time Big West Coach of the Year Paul Smolinski is in his 20th season at the helm of the UCI men's golf program. The long-time coach has a veteran squad with eight returners, five of which are seniors.
