IRVINE, Calif. - Bruce Man-Son-Hing returns to his alma mater as a member of the men's tennis coaching staff, head coach Mike Saunders announced.

"Bruce is one of the all-time Anteater greats," said Saunders. "As a player and a leader, he was instrumental in taking our program from a Division II powerhouse to a perennial top-20 Division I team for many years."

Man-Son-Hing, a 1986 graduate from UCI, played No. 1 for the Anteaters from 1983-86. He etched his name in the UCI record books where he ranks third in singles wins (124), fourth in doubles victories (65) and seventh in win percentage (.697). Man-Son-Hing was a four-time NCAA singles participant and helped UCI advance to the round of 16 in 1983, where the Anteaters finished the season ranked as high as No. 13. He was the Big West Player of the Year in 1985 and assisted the Anteaters to Big West regular-season titles from 1983-1985. Man-Son-Hing played under UCI Hall of Fame and NCAA Coach of the Year Greg Patton.

"We both had the good fortune to play for the General, Greg Patton, one of the most successful and dynamic coaches in college tennis," added Saunders.

After graduation, Man-Son-Hing played professionally on the ATP Tour from 1986-90. He reached a career-high 305 in singles and 132 in doubles. His success was greater in doubles, where he played in all four grand slam events with partner John Letts. The duo reached the second round of the Australian Open and Wimbledon Championships in 1989. He also reached the finals for two Grand Prix events and won three challenger events. Man-Son-Hing still competes at a national level along with his son Bruce and daughter Sabrina. In 2012, he was the World ITF Champion in 45 men's doubles and has ranked No. 1 in the nation in 45 men's doubles as well as senior father-son.

"As a coach, Bruce is positive, nurturing and tactically as good as it gets. He was a very talented and intelligent player, as well as a fierce competitor. We are both very passionate about rebuilding our beloved program to once again become one of the best in the country," Saunders remarked.

His son Bruce is currently a sophomore on the UCI men's tennis team.

Bruce and his wife Ari, have been married for 28 years. He also owns a tennis shop in Studio City.
