NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's tennis team fell to Southern Utah, 7-0, Friday at Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach.
With the loss, UCI drops to 8-8 on the season.
SUU (7-6) took the early lead after winning at No. 3 doubles as the Thunderbirds' Laura Lozano/Daniela Cozzi defeated the Anteaters' Gillian Parker and Stephanie Nguyen, 6-0. Nos. one and two doubles were abandoned.
SUU carried its momentum into singles winning in all six spots. Arianna Tilbury battled at No. 5 playing winning the second set 6-3 after dropping the first, 6-7 (6-8). In the tiebreaker, Tilbury fell 10-7. At No. 4, Yulin Chen dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back to win the second, 10-7, before ultimately dropping the tiebreaker, 10-7.
Stephanie Hazell fell in the top spot, 6-2, 6-2, to SUU's Ghita Nassik.
UCI will take a short break before returning to action Wednesday, March 28 for a match against Pacific in Stockton.
