Tilbury Leads UCI to 4-2 Win Over Bradley
March 13, 2018 | Women's Tennis
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Sophomore Arianna Tilbury won at No. 5 singles to clinch the match and lead UC Irvine to a 4-2 victory over Bradley, Tuesday morning at Newport Beach Tennis Club.
"So proud of the team today! It's not easy to do such a quick turnaround from our Hawai'i trip," said head coach Elizabeth Ferris. "I thought we adjusted well to the date change. This was a pull yourself up by the bootstraps kind of day. They showed a lot of positivity and willingness to fight and be coachable. That's what college tennis is all about!"
Tilbury defeated Bradley's Victoria Gonzalez 6-4, 7-5, in No. 5 singles after being down 0-3 in the first set and 1-4 in the second. The win clinched the match for UCI (8-7, 1-1). She also teamed up with Stephanie Nguyen in No. 3 doubles, the duo defeated the Braves' Gonzalez/Kinga Kovacs 6-4 to clinch the doubles point for the 'Eaters.
"I came in with a calm attitude today and the focus to play smart and within myself," said Tilbury. "Steph and I were down 0-3 when we picked it up and played higher percentage shots and stayed focused. We clinched it with focus and determination. Singles started off slow for me as well. I had to relax and remind myself to take it point by point. My teammates and coaches were encouraging and helped me stay focused on the game plan. With a calm mind I was able to close it out."
The pair of Flora Amiri and Yulin Chen triumphed at No. 2 doubles by a score of 6-2.
Bradley came back to knot the game at one with a win at No. 4 singles and then took the lead after a victory at the top spot. Jacqueline Tsodikova (6-4, 6-3) and Amiri (6-3, 6-3) picked up wins on courts six and three, respectively, to tie the match at two.
"I came in today with a positive attitude, I just wanted to play my game and not care what the outcome was," said Amiri. "Gillian [Parker] definitely helped be pull through, by keeping me focused."
Tilbury was the deciding factor to give UCI its second-straight win. Nguyen was still in action on court two with Bradley's Natalia Barbery, but the match was abandoned after the 'Eaters clinched.
UCI will return to the court for a match against Southern Utah Friday (Mar. 16) at 1:30 p.m. at Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach.
