IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine men's track & field has signed Jake Burns (Mission Viejo, Calif.) to a National Letter of Intent head coach Jeff Perkins announced on Thursday.
"We are excited to add an athlete of Jake's caliber to our program," Perkins said. "He will bring much needed depth to the sprint core as well as a high level of talent that will make him unique within our conference and beyond."
Jake Burns, who is currently a senior at Trabuco Hills High School, is one of the top returning sprinters in the state. As a junior, he established personal-bests of 10.56 in the 100m and 21.40 in the 200m, which ranked fourth and 10th, respectively, among all high school athletes in California. His times would have also been among the top-eight in the Big West Conference last year. He finished no lower than eighth in every race with 10 individual victories.
Burns is the reigning South Coast League champion in the 100m and 200m. He went on to place sixth in both events at the CIF-Southern Section Division I Finals, and was eighth at the CIF-SS Masters Meet.
Burns was also a member of the Mustangs' 4x100 relay team that qualified for the 2018 CIF State Championships. They ran a season-best 41.24 to claim runner-up honors at the Masters Meet.
