No. 7 UC Irvine Edged by No. 4 Cal, 10-8

BERKELEY, Calif. – The seventh-ranked UC Irvine women's water polo team held a 5-4 lead over No. 4 Cal at halftime but the 'Eaters could not hold on, ultimately dropping a 10-8 decision to the Golden Bears Sunday morning on the final day of the Cal Invitational.
With the loss, UCI falls to 1-2 on the season. Cal remains perfect with a 5-0 record.
Freshman Tara Prentice led UCI with four goals. Four Anteaters had one goal each including Allie Loomis, Calysa Toledo, Isabel Rack and Natalie Seidemann. It the first goal of Toledo's career.
In goal, Jenna Phreaner made six saves.
Cal jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Prentice scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity to put the 'Eaters on the board in the first quarter.
The Golden Bears added another goal early in the second frame but UCI scored four straight to take a 5-4 lead into the half. Two of the four goals during the stretch came from extraman opportunities.
Cal tied the game at five in the third frame and added two more to take a 7-5 lead. Prentice notched another goal with 23 seconds left in the third quarter to keep UCI within one, 7-6.
Prentice added her fourth goal of the day with two minutes left in the fourth frame to make it a 9-8 game but Cal added a late goal to seal the 10-8 win.
The Goldean Bears' Dora Antal had a team-best four goals while Madison Tagg made eight stops in goal.
The Anteaters concluded the Cal Invite with an exhibition game against China where they fell, 15-5. Freshman Kayleigh Schultz had three goals in the match.
UCI will take a short break from competition before traveling to La Jolla for the Triton Invitational Feb. 10-11.
