‘Eaters Earn Pair of Wins on Day One of Triton Invite

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The seventh-ranked UC Irvine women's water polo team earned a pair of victories on the first day of the Triton Invitational, Saturday in La Jolla. UCI downed Santa Clara 16-3 in its first game before grabbing a 19-7 win over No. 23 CSUN in the afternoon.
With the wins, UCI improves to 3-2 on the season.
GAME ONE – No. 7 UC Irvine 16, Santa Clara 3
Senior Allie Loomis led the Anteaters with three goals while Julie Swieca, Natalie Seidemann and Megan Falcon each added a pair.
Toni Shackelford put the 'Eaters on the board first, scoring her first collegiate goal less than two minutes in the first quarter. The UCI defense held the Broncos scorless while adding four more of its own to take a 5-0 lead into the second quarter.
The 'Eaters added a pair in the second frame to go up 7-0 at halftime.
Seidemann notched another goal early in the third quarter before SCU got on the board with 5:06 left on the clock. UCI put five more on the board taking a 13-1 lead into the final quarter.
Freshman Isabel Rack capped the 'Eaters scoring in the fourth quarter as UCI earned the decisive victory.
Morgan Jones and Jenna Phreaner each split time in goal.

Seidemann notched a hat trick, scoring a team-best three goals while Corinna Toledo, Dani Ayala and Rack each added two in UCI's 12-point victory.
In goal, Phreaner played the first half while Riley Shaw and Jones saw action in the second.
The 'Eaters jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Rack scored on a penalty shot with 1:35 left in the frame.
UCI continued its scoring attack notching six more goals to go up, 9-0, with 48 seconds showing on the clock in the second frame. The Matadors'Sarah Dempsey was able to put one into the net wth one second remaining to make it a 9-1 game at the half.
After four more goals in the third stanza, UCI exploded with six more in the final frame to seal the win. Two of the 'Eaters fourth quarter goals came off penalty shots.
UC Irvine faces second-ranked USC tomorrow at 11:10 a.m. The 'Eaters will play again at 4:30 p.m. or 5:50 p.m. depending on the result of their first game.
