BERKELEY, Calif. – The seventh-ranked UC Irvine women's water polo team split two games on the first day of the Cal Invitational. UCI topped No. 15 San Jose State in its season-opener before falling to first-ranked Stanford in the afternoon game.
The Anteaters begin the season 1-1. The Spartans move to 2-2 on the year and Stanford remains perfect with a 2-0 record.
"I thought we had a good first day," said head coach Dan Klatt. "We got an important win versus San Jose State in the morning and had an opportunity to see what it will take to be the best versus Stanford in the afternoon. We can be better, and we will be better, but I am satisfied with where we are today".
