No. 6 UC Irvine Rolls To A 3-0 Win Over NJIT

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Middle blocker Scott Stadick had a match-high nine kills and seven total blocks to lead No. 6 UC Irvine in a 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-21) sweep of NJIT at Antelope Gymnasium.
The Anteaters extend their winning streak to three straight and improved to 5-1 overall. NJIT goes to 0-7.
Stadick hit .467 (9-2-15) and posted a season-high in total blocks. Outside hitter JB Kam hit .600 with six kills and no errors in 10 attempts. Setter Logan Zotovich had a career-high 18 set assists, while recording three kills in three attempts. Redshirt freshman Patrick Sohacki made his Anteater debut, putting away three kills, while Grant Freidman added his first two kills. David Parker led the squad with seven digs.
The Anteaters hit .388 and totaled a season-high six aces. UCI out-blocked NJIT 9-2.
The Highlanders were led by Alvaro Gimeno with nine kills and Raymond Kowalski with eight kills. NJIT hit .082 (28-22-73).
A kill by Aaron Koubi was followed by a block by Matthew Younggren and Dante Chakravorti and another NJIT attack error to give the Anteaters some separation in the first set, 9-5. Scott Stadick had two kills and back-to-back blocks in a 5-0 run to put UCI up 16-7 and the Anteaters would win the set 25-13. UCI committed just one error, hitting .476 (11-1-21).
Four straight points in the second set, which included an ace by JB Kam and a block by Stadick and Koubi catapulted UCI to an 8-4 advantage. Behind the serving of Koubi, UCI peeled off four in a row to extend the lead to 15-8. Patrick Sohacki made his UCI debut, adding two kills in the 25-17 victory.
An ace by Grant Friedman gave UCI a 16-10 lead in the third set. NJIT rallied on an 8-3 spurt to narrow the gap (19-18), but a kill by Friedman stopped the momentum. A kill by Stadick ended the set 25-21.
UCI continues action in Antelope Gymnasium tomorrow with an exhibition at 10:00 a.m. against Benedictine then a 5:00 p.m. match versus host No. 12 Grand Canyon.
NOTES: It is the third sweep of the season...33 kills is a season-low for the Anteaters...Kam has started all six matches and has recorded at least four kills or more in each one...his .600 hitting mark was a career best.
