SACRAMENTO, Calif. - UC Irvine upcoming junior Isaiah Jewett and alum Charles Jock both advanced out of the first round of the 800-meter at the USA Track & Field Championships Thursday evening at Hornet Stadium.
The top two finishers in each of the five heats plus the next six fastest times qualified for Friday evening's semifinal.
Jewett led after the first 400 meters of Heat 1 and ended up taking fourth with a time of 1:47.73. He had to wait it out over the final four sections, but his time stood as the 11th-best of the day. It was Jewett's second-straight sub-1:48 race as he also registered a personal-record 1:47.43 at the NCAA Championships on June 7. He ranks second in school history behind Charles Jock (1:44.67).
Jock ran in the fifth and final heat of Thursday's first round where he took third at 1:46.92. He ended up placing fifth overall with the fastest time qualifier.
The duo will be back in action starting at 8:11 p.m. on Friday, June 23. Jewett is scheduled to run in Heat 1 and Jock in Heat 2. Recent graduate Lloyd Sicard will also compete in the first round of the 110-meter hurdles on Saturday.
The USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships serve as a qualifying meet for the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London, Aug. 4-13. The top-three finishers per event will earn a spot on Team USA, should they reach the IAAF qualifying standards.
