IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine's Lloyd Sicard (110H) and Isaiah Jewett (800m) are set to compete in their signature events at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships this week. The national meet will take place at Hornet Stadium from June 22-25.
Lloyd Sicard who graduated with a degree in sociology this past weekend, registered his qualifying time in the 110m hurdles at the Big West Championships where he claimed the conference title in 13.61 seconds. That was his wind-legal season-best, while he also ran a wind-aided personal-record 13.55 at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational.
Earlier this month, Sicard made his third-straight appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships where he had a 14th-place showing to earn USTFCCCA second-team All-America honors. The Gardena, Calif., native is a three-time Big West 110H champion, and helped the 'Eaters bring home the 4x400 conference title this year - their first since 2012. Sicard is UCI's school record holder at 13.60, which he established at the 2015 NCAA West Prelims. He was the 2014 Big West Men's Freshman of the Year and the 2016 Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Year.
Isaiah Jewett recently concluded an impressive sophomore campaign with USTFCCCA second-team All-America honors as he was 11th in the 800m at the NCAA Championships. That is where he recorded his U.S. Championship qualifying time, crossing the finish line in a lifetime-best 1:47.43. The Inglewood, Calif., native also went undefeated during the regular season and claimed the Big West individual title in his first year focusing on the 800m. After running 1:54.38 in his only 800m race as a freshman, Jewett finished the 2017 campaign with four sub-1:49 times and set a career best on four occasions. In addition, Jewett was a member of the Big West champion and NCAA West Regional qualifying 4x400 relay.
Jewett will be joined by UCI alum and 2016 Olympian Charles Jock in the 800m this week. Jock, who was also an NCAA Champion and three-time All-American as an Anteater, qualified with a time of 1:45.48. Jock still holds the UC Irvine 800m record at 1:44.67, while Jewett ranks second in program history (1:47.43).
The USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships serve as a qualifying meet for the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London, Aug. 4-13. The top-three finishers per event will earn a spot on Team USA, should they reach the IAAF qualifying standards.
NBC, NBCSN and NBC Sports Gold will air comprehensive live coverage of the USATF Outdoor Championships.
