AUSTIN, Texas - Junior Persis William-Mensah opened the NCAA West Preliminary Championships for the UC Irvine women's track & field team Thursday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
In the first round of the 100m, William-Mensah clocked in at 11.43 seconds to place fifth in Heat 2 and 26th overall. The Costa Mesa, Calif., native ended up just two spots out of advancing to tomorrow's quarterfinal round as she finished two-hundredths of a second behind the final time qualifier.
William-Mensah, who ran her fifth wind-aided sub-11.50 race this year, was the Big West's top performer in the 100m at the regional meet, coming in ahead of conference champion Marie Veale (CSUN) and Long Beach State's Courtne' Davis. Earlier this year, she claimed runner-up honors at the Big West Championships and broke her own school record with a wind-legal career-best 11.57 at the Mondo Team Challenge.
The Anteaters will be back in action tomorrow with sophomore Barbara Coward in the discus at 10 a.m. (PDT). Senior Megan George and junior Tyra Jones will also kick off Friday's track events in the first round of the 100m hurdles at 2:30 p.m. (PDT).
