IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's track & field team opened the UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic with three events Friday at Anteater Stadium.
Sophomore Lisa Vasquez led nine 'Eaters in the 5000m as she crossed the finish line in 17:31.49 to claim runner-up honors. Freshman Anastasia Karnaze was also third at 17:37.42, while senior Aliya Shah came in fifth (17:46.38). Senior Courtney Sharar contributed a 10th-place showing (18:10.61).
In her first meet of the season, junior Raena Ramirez took third in the javelin with a toss of 137-04. Senior Melanie Speech added a fourth-place finish at 132-07.
Sophomore Barbara Coward (156-08) and junior Dazhana Bauer-Jackson (155-00) also finished seventh and eighth in the hammer throw, respectively. The hammer competition was held in the morning at Golden West College in Huntington Beach.
The Anteaters will be back in action tomorrow on the second and final day of the UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic. The field events begin at 10 a.m., while action on the track gets underway at noon.
